Christmas Counts cover a circle with a 24km/15mile diameter.
The map below shows the Edmonton count area. The circle was designated years ago and remains constant as officially recognized by Birds Canada and Audubon. This consistency is important in collecting scientific data.
The circle is divided into 16 zones, 1 through 12, 13S, 13N, 14 and 15.
Each zone has a designated zone captain (or two) who contacts and organizes the participants for their area. Captains tally their zone results and forward them to the count compiler.
